Craziest Shit Ever: The Gastonia Police Sniper Conference In North Carolina

in craziest shit ever, fnord

I recently opened my power bill, as people do, and I  was a tad surprised to find a flyer for the upcoming Sniper Conference.  It’s put on by the police, and the tag line is:

PUBLIC EVENT

Test Your Skill

Train in similar conditions

police snipers train under.

Do you have what it takes?

I grew up in New Hampshire. I’m all about Live Free Or Die, and certainly gun folk are among the safest folk with their guns. I just think it’s very odd to receive unsolicited advertisement for a SNIPER conference in with my utility bill. I’m used to handy tips about saving water and reducing electricity around the home. Maybe a coupon for insulation or weatherstripping in the winter. How odd. North Carolina is certainly different, Youdopians.

Wow… and people wonder… I think it’s a tack to find all the nuts out there that want to pretend that they could be snipers… get them to voluntarily give their name and address and bingo! You have a list of suspects! LOL

Either that or the po-lice are trying to show how hard their job is…

  2. I don’t think its a tack to find all the nuts out there, I think it’s an enviroment in which the police can foster a quality public rifle competition that some people are interested in. I think the event is great and I am not even a huge fan of guns. The public events which you write about are all fundraisers for the Special Olympic and Gatsonia Police Memorial Fund. Kudos to the PD for showing how hard their job is and finding a way to include the public in a normally closed event.

  3. I think you’re right, Kara (from a Gastonia Marketing firm that may or may not have had something to do with the flyer in the power bill). I’m not a gun nut, nor am I an anti gun nut. My main theme is that it’s profoundly odd, to me, to have such content in with my utility bill. I’m used to pancake breakfasts, softball games, bbq’s, etc as fundraisers… but never a sniper conference. I’m 100% certain that it’s safe, fine, and fun (for people who like such things). As far as marketing goes, well… I guess it’s successful given that I hadn’t heard of such a thing before. It wasn’t offensive to me, just weird. And as far as Elizabeth goes… well… she’s right too.

  4. I had today off so I stopped to check out this Sniper Event. These guys were walking around laughing and joking, so I decided to try and speak to them. They treated me like I was their neighbor. As I watched them compete against each other. I sat beside them talking to them almost all day. Even heard them asking each other for advise. They seemed very willing to help each other. I was amazed. Just think maybe seeing the football players go over and asking the opposing team for there next play. Yea right. Gonna take my son back there in the morning . I also was given a free t-shirt from one of the guys. I have to say these guys, all of them were very fun to be around today. I hope they continue this event and did I mention its free. Im not a gun person I just found it interesting to see how and what these guys do. I had no idea of how big this event was. And very proud to see local teams from here competing.
