Jimmy Page Closes The Olympics In A Genius Move From A PR Standpoint

in Coolest Shit Ever, fnord, Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin, music

I think this is brilliant, youdopians. Cheesy to the max, the Super Bowl Halftime Show times a thousand, but… BILLIONS of people saw Jimmy Page not suck. From a PR standpoint, Mr. Page was just watched by half the fucking world. Nice. His solo was HOT! He’s obviously playing, and his appearance with John Paul Jones and the Foo Fighters had been rehearsed for months. Why? Is there new product to promote? Nope. Why? Why indeed?

  1. Ugh–I don’t know Mark–I saw this, and I thought it was a bit over the top. Jimmy’s guitar playing is awesome, as usual, but the whole Macy’s parade-type atmosphere just seems–out of whack. And Leonia Lewis–I had a hard time watching this! Nonetheless–I think Mr. Page is trying to keep himself “relevant” in the 2000s, not that he has to try very hard!

Did he play with the foo fighters? I missed that part…

I don’t know who the girl was, but I thought she sucked… well, maybe not sucked, but this song was CLEARLY not in her genre. It didn’t look like she even knew who Mr. J was. Nice knees, though…

As impressed with the opening ceremony as I was (and I really did think it was inspired and fabulous) the London portion of the closing seemed like camp kids who had put together a skit to play at the intermission of a Broadway extravaganza.

Someone in London didn’t sleep after that… they have quite an act to follow…

To paraphrase a broadcaster, no matter what you think of China’s Politics or Human Rights Record (both of which are on the nasty side of Draconian) they certainly did themselves proud with their Olympics.

    :-) Long Live Jimmy Page…

  3. Brigid,

Everything you say is true… but I’m right. The chink in your armor is when you said “his guitar playing is awesome, as usual.”
Here is where our paths cross. You are but a sprite. Did you stay up late to watch the ARMS Concert on MTV in 1983, and watch the worstest, junkiest, awfullest Jimmy ever? I lived through the Firm. That was a hard band to love. I remember pushing up to the front row, as the curtain parted, and seeing Jimmy Page six feet away. Then they played Firm songs.
Live Aid.. I left work early.
    Oh… the pain.
The fact that in that electroplated turdfest that I saw in Beijing… I liked his playing. I’m still used to him fucking up and being awful.
The whole thing was ridiculous, and I haven’t watched it since. I was proud because Jimmy wasn’t wearing a Hawaiian shirt, black socks and shorts, and he didn’t have a perm… he’s the Johnny Cash of rock now. HE was cool. I said yay.
Jimmy will one day be my bff.
