Coolest Shit Ever: Secret Message Found Engraved INSIDE Abe Lincoln’s Pocketwatch
11 Mar, 2009 in Coolest Shit Ever, fnordHello, Youdopia! I came across this neato story about the grandson of Lincoln’s watch repairman, sharing a family legend about a message that was carved onto the innards of Abraham Lincoln’s pocket watch.
Jonathan Dillon, working in a watch repair shop in DC in 1861, was working on Lincoln’s watch when word of the attack on Fort Sumter… starting the Civil War.
According to The Watchismo Times(where I found this story):
Dillon told his children (and, half a century later, a reporter for the New York Times) that he opened the watch’s inner workings and scrawled his name, the date and a message for the ages: “The first gun is fired. Slavery is dead. Thank God we have a President who at least will try.”
Take a look at the story and enjoy a really neat little story, and yes… I think this is the Coolest Shit Ever.
