Coolest Shit Ever: The Catacombs Of Rome Are 3D Mapped With High Resolution Scanners (all 115 miles of them!)
5 May, 2009 in Coolest Shit Ever, fnordSo, I was reading the latest journal from the Austrian Academy Of Sciences, as is my custom, and I saw this amazing project. Full 360 degree laser mapping, and scanning, of the Roman Catacombs. Which ones, you ask? All of them. The full 100+ miles of them, not the 500 meters that is open to the public.
Now the opportunities for academics is undeniable, but the cool factor of this is off the chart. This is definitely the Coolest Shit Ever. Now high resolution photos can be created by simply accessing the data at hand. The extra cool thing is that now you can take a virtual walk through the catacombs (something you can’t do with photographs) and examine frescoes, inscriptions, ancient Christians wearing swastikas, all kinds of stuff. So, there. Enjoy.

thank you, that image is simply stunning.
