Coolest Shit Ever: The Known Universe In Six Minutes
19 Dec, 2009 in Coolest Shit Ever, fnord, wisdomKnock knock. Who’s There? Infinity. Infinity who? Infinity is pretty amazingly large. My dear Youdopia, one of the blogs I read daily, is The Daily Grail. This little video which is a zippity doo dah tour from Tibet to the edge of the cosmic horizon and back, was posted there. I just nicked it and reposted it here. Ta da. I’m an ahtist.
This video was made by the American Museum of Natural History, and it’s pretty cool. Is it the Coolest Shit Ever? Well, no, it’s not mind blowing. It is pretty cool, though. Considering that we’re finding watery planets all over the place now, and even watery moons in our own solar system… we might want to bone up on the neighborhood.

What may cook your brain is… What we view in space has changed significantly since lightspeed and distance in the billions distort the actual likeness of the know universe. What we see as earthbound creatures is nothing but an archive.
Nice phrasing! Nothing but an archive. I like that.
Nice f-n diagram, although i do not believe the outside view can be achieved which shows the entire universe whithin a sphere. It seems to me that all of space/ time is infinite, therefore an outside look is impossible. There is matter as far out as imaginable for a reason, and more. But this makes it acceptable to the average mind!
I know what you mean. It’s a very neat, compelling, but utlimately childishly simplistic view. I don’t think the creator of the vid is up on string theory, or m theory, or anything like that. It’s wild. I agree about space/time, and if it’s infinite, then it can’t be enclosed.
Thank you for the insightful comment! I hope you come back.
