Coolest Shit Ever: Free Download – Led Zeppelin 6/29/80 Zurich (AUD/SBD Matrix)

in Coolest Shit Ever, fnord, Free Download, Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin, music

This show was the first CD bootleg I ever bought, Youdopia. It was also the first Zeppelin CD bootleg. The show is a good one, especially since 1980 was not a good year for Bonzo and Jimmy. However, they were pulling themselves out of it, and had the fates been kinder, they might have recovered fully. More likely though, they would have been subjected to the 1980′s and turned into Genesis, with Robert Plant.

This show is a fun one. Led Zeppelin toured Europe in 1980 as a warm up to a big American tour (that sadly never happened). They did stripped down versions of their songs. No more 30 minute solos. No drum solo, no long songs, no fucking around. Rock and roll. They’re bare bones version of Nobody’s Fault but Mine is awesome. In The Evening suffers from lame sounding cheesy keyboards, but still has its moments. All of My Love is well done, with some tasty Jimmy licks, as is Hot Dog. I love the Trampled Underfoot, and Train Kept A Rollin.

Jimmy Page was in good form this show. You can see some video of this very performance in an earlier post of mine. The band had such a good time, they even did Heartbreaker, wonderfully. 1980 Zeppelin is kind of like mid 90′s Grateful Dead. It’s definitely not as good as the earlier days, but still gems do sparkle. This is a gem, and the Coolest Shit Ever.

Bluecongo’s Comments:

I made this mix very “wet & nasty”.  I really wanted to capture the energy of the crowd and the band reacting to it.  This new version I believe will cast a new light on the 1980 tour.  I did my best to include as much in between song banter as possible.  The Aud taper often paused his recorder in between songs to save tape apparently.  The warts of the Aud & SB recordings have been left in.  Drop outs, crackles, etc.  Kashmir switches from SB to Aud source midway through the song.

Regarding Kashmir, I have taken the unprecedented step of offering two versions of the song.  One version has the tremendous screw up in the middle of the song edited out.  The other version is the “warts & all” version.  I leave it up to you to decide which you want to listen to.  I think you’ll prefer the edited version.

Mustardpie’s comments:

The uncut Kashmir could not be inserted into the original track ordering without a noticeable click at the beginning. A very tiny bit of sound from the trailing note of Black Mountain Side had been clipped from the uncut Kashmir. I restored this tiny bit of data from the beginning of the edited Kashmir back to the beginning of the uncut Kashmir. Now the tracks flow seamlessly into each other.

Also, CD Wave introduced some sector boundary errors at the end of each disk and in the uncut Kashmir. I encoded the complete Kashmir back to flac level 8, named it to fit the track listing above, and fixed SBEs with shntool with the output set to flac level 8.

Bluecongo gave me his approval to torrent this show. I offer my thanks to him for the hard work he put into this show. I certainly enjoy this version better than the plain soundboard recording.

Downloading as I speak…or type. Thank you!
Interesting analogies re: Genesis and the GD. Genesis went from prog->pop, without ever being really “cool.” LZ may have been criusing down that pop highway, but had the cool (plus blues, R&B roots) factor all along, so it would have been interesting to see.
    And, because, I can’t resist…
…most Dead fans would likely agree that true mid-90′s Dead (Jerrry passed in July ’95) was awful, much worse by analogy than LZ’s decline.
But none of this is to disagree with your points, I see what you mean : )

    Thank you, August.

re: genesis, I meant that in the 80′s, that Robert would likely become a solo artist, like Phil Collins, while still singing w/ Zeppelin. Both Jimmy and Bonzo were on a downward path, and I think the 80′s would have eaten them up before it got better, and we would have ended up with that horror of horrors…. a bad Led Zeppelin album.

  3. Please tell me it labored correct? I dont would like to sumit it once more if i usually do not need to! Either the web site glitced out or i am an idiot, the 2nd choice doesnt surprise me lol. thank you for an awesome website!
