NASA Probe Maps Mercury, Takes Surprising Beautiful, and Colorful Pictures
31 Jul, 2010 in Coolest Shit Ever, fnordDid you know about NASA’s mercury probe, Youdopia? It’s called Messenger, and it’s completed a map of Mercury. From the images above, I guess Mercury is inhabited by hippies. Maybe its following Phish this summer, but… I never expected such tie dyed beauty from a planet that is straight up blasted by the Sun. This NYT article talks about all the intensity Mercury endures.
I never had any interest in the planet for that reason. The Sun constantly pummels Mercury with energy, so nothing really neato can happen, but still… I didn’t expect the pretty colors. That alone, along with the fact that there’s a little robot out on its own, taking pics of another planet, makes it the Coolest Shit Ever.
If you liked this, you can see amazing pictures from the Cassini Probe here.

Stunning images! This little planet endures a 1100 degree differnetial…the surface can reach 800*F and, because there is no atmosphere, as low as -300F.
It delights me that there is beauty that Humanity can’t f*ck up…
