New, Raw Images Of Saturns Moon Enceladus From The Cassini Probe. Amazing.
16 Aug, 2010 in Coolest Shit Ever, fnordThose of you who read Youdopia regularly (PBUY) will remember that I have a special place in my heart for Enceladus, the watery moon of Saturn. I can’t get over the fact that the plumes, seen in the image above (taken on 8/13) are water vapor and organic compounds. I sincerely hope I live long enough to see life discovered elsewhere. I know it’s a statistical near certainty, but to be alive when that day arrives… fills me with what FItzgerald called “something commensurate with our capacity to wonder”.
You can see more of these raw, unprocessed images, on the CICLOPS site.
We’re a curious species. One day we’ll find life, or life will find us, I’m fairly certain. Until then, may these images bring you back to the days when you gazed at the heavens and whispered, “Hello?”

It’s things like this that bring tears to my eyes. Honest to goodness… no matter how we fuck up this planet, we are not the end-all, be-all.
Who’s to know but someday in the far far future, Enceladusians(?) will be arguing about the myth that Earth actually could support life. “It’s too hot… there is too much water… not enough methane… It would never happen.”
It is amazing to see something like this. I would type more but I am speechless in awe at our ability to photograph it.
Awwww, Liz! You did it. You tickled my funnybone… you slut!
Yes, indeed. I think it’s very, very cool. The universe is big… to quote Douglas Adams.
It’s truly amazing that we have these little emissaries flying throughout our solar system. Soon, with a few years, the Voyager probes will officially leave our solar system, and be honestly exploring open space. Even if we kill ourselves, and melt the earth to a cinder, those little guys will bear witness to our being.
