Free Download Friday – Lou Reed Live “New York” Tour 1989. Fantastic sound, Coolest Shit Ever.
3 Sep, 2010 in Coolest Shit Ever, fnord, Free Download, musicHappy Friday, Youdopia. I offer for your enjoyment a wonderful Lou Reed concert, from 1989. It’s from his tour for the New York album, which was one of his best albums ever. A definite renaissance of Mr Reed’s career, preceding the super mega awesome 1993 Velvet Underground reunion and tour. This is a great choice for Free Download Friday.
We have a great sounding, high energy concert from Ovens Auditorium, in Charlotte, NC, on 8/7/1989. As an extra treat, Moe Tucker (from the Velvet Underground), sits in and plays drums on Dime Store Mystery. Cool Beans. Enjoy the music. Lou is the Coolest Shit Ever.

Lou makes a rare trip down south. I’ll always remember this show as the night I abandoned my Audi on the side of the road to get there in time and the first show I taped with a decent deck, the Sony WMD3. The car, turned out to be her final voyage. The deck, turned out to be the first of quite a few satisfying trips together. I literally received the D3 that afternoon and at times on the recording you can tell we’re getting acquainted. Nothing major to diminish the enjoyment though. I missed Moe Tucker’s opening set and got there just in the nick of time for Lou. I really love the “New York” album – I still consider it one of Lou’s strongest – and a lot of material is from that record. Great show in a great little venue. One more note on this – I have a suspicion this is missing a song or two and the last track is out of order. I couldn’t find my master cassette to confirm but I think for the purposes of constructing an 80 minute version to fit on one CD this is what might have occurred way back when this was originally transferred. I’ll continue to look for the master tape and when found will rectify the situation if that is indeed the case. In the meantine, y’all enjoy.

I caught this tour in Denver when I lived in Boulder. I wasn’t familiar with the album but was given a ticket, so I went, figuring I had nothing to lose. What a pleasant surprise it turned out to be…I didn’t want the show to end.
I caught the tour before this. Saw him at the Orpheum. I went with Rik Hopkins and someone else, I think. It was an excellent show, but lacking all that solid material from New York.
I love the New York album because it came out when I was going to Berklee, and I would listen to it on my (wait for it) Discman, on the train into the city. Great album. Some of the songs on it are among my favorites of all time.
