Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck

I have a neat show to share with you, Youdopia. It is the first date of the ARMS Tour, and it features Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Joe Cocker, Paul Rodgers, Ronnie Lane, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, Kenney Jones, and more.  Quite a show! This tour happened because Ronnie Lane (bass player for the Faces) was suffering from MS, and wanted to raise money for research (and hyperbaric chambers, which helped him) because MS is a shitty way to die.

This show took place in Dallas, TX, and marked the first US appearance of Jimmy Page, in over 6 years (7/24/77 Oakland was Led Zeppelin’s last show in the States). It’s well known that Jimmy was dealing with some dependency issues, so his playing isn’t stellar, but it’s not bad either. I prefer it to much of the Firm (which had its genesis in the collaboration with Paul Rodgers on this tour) shows.

Jeff Beck is inhumanly awesome, as usual, and Clapton is Clapton. He’s very mellow in this set, more Lay Down Sally than Layla (although both were played). Good stuff, really good. I believe all these shows were pro shot on video. I have a few of them and they are totally professional , with a timecode. You can see most of them on youtube.

Boolah Boolah, Youdopia. Great song. Clapton is spending the Sept of his years playing with who he wants. He told Rolling Stone that he always felt like a dick (paraphrasing here) because he pretty much just bailed on Blind Faith, because of drugs/fame. That’s why Clapton went underground (kinda) and went with Derek and the Dominoes, instead of Eric Clapton’s super awesome group w/ Duane Allman. Drugs and anguish can make for great music. Layla is amazing, as is Bell Bottom Blues, the two big hits from that band. So… dig it. It’s the coolest shit ever.

For extra points and a chance at the bonus round I ask you to listen to this version of the same song from 1970, by Derek and the Dominos. Mr Clapton outdoes himself, in my opinion, especially with the wah wah string bending @ 2:00. Check it out. Live music, when it’s performed by masters, and there’s magic in the air, is trascendent. You can watch a slideshow of Derek and the Dominoes pix while listening. Amazing band, amazing songs, short short life. Definitely a case of burnout rather than fade away.

Let’s not forget the writer of the song, Mr Jimi Hendrix, either. I understand he also played guitar.
