6/28/70 Led Zeppelin’s “Best” Performance

Anyone who ever went through any sort of Led Zeppelin phase, is familiar with the pictures of Jimmy Page wearing an overcoat and a “yokel” hat onstage.  The Bath Festival has been held in quite reverence ever since they got offstage, back in 1970.  The sun went down behind them, as they took the stage, and tens of thousands of stoners went,”whoa……..”.

Although the show was professionally filmed, and taped, it hasn’t seen the light of day. If memory serves, Jimmy Page looked into purchasing this footage, for the Led Zeppelin DVD release, but the price was too high. There are only a couple of bootlegs of this show, and they all sound like shit. The one used in the video (which as synced by ssellers, who is amazing) below is a newly found source. It’s much less distorted than other sources, and one can now hear the show (although the quality is still pretty rough).

Anyway, I’m rambling. At this show, Led Zeppelin debuted songs from the as yet unreleased Led Zeppelin 3 album. It’s cool. A good rule of thumb is that if Jimmy Page is wearing a sweater vest, or a fishing hat onstage, then it’s going to be a great show. It wasn’t until he started being “cool” that his chops suffered (prolly from all them drugs what he took). Enjoy.

You will probably not like this. It’s pure, free, improvisation. Most people call it noise. Supersilent is a Norwegian avant garde improv group, that’s been around almost 15 years.

This clip is from the Moldejazz Festival 2011 (just a few days ago), and features Jonesy jumping in and kicking ass with the mighty nords. John Paul Jones keeps busy like a mofo, and always doing cool stuff, like Seasick Steve, or the collaboration with Sonic Youth, or the Anna Nicole opera, or his own supergroup, Them Crooked Vultures.

Dave Grohl Back On Drums

I don’t mean to jam more Seasick Steve down your throat, but this just happened, right after Seasick Steve and John Paul Jones (from Led Zeppelin) played with Jack White and Dead Weather. It was a busy weekend.I found this on the Consequence of Sound blog.

Dave Grohl and the other Foo Fighters had a huge guest list recently. They’re filming a live DVD, and the guest appearances make it more appealing, plus… wouldn’t you if you could? If you recall, back in 2008 both John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page jammed with the Foo Fighters. This year it was Alice Cooper, Bob Mould, Roger Taylor, and Jonesy and Steve. I hope you dig it. It’s the Coolest Thing Ever.

John Paul Jones Still Coolest Zep Member

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) has been touring with primitive blues artist Seasick Steve (he’s huge in the UK), and I though I had posted a live performance of them already, but apparently I never did. This will not do. Seasick Steve is 70 year old blues guitarist who has been promoted, and produced, by Jack White. You can see how they would be compatible.

This performance features Steve, John Paul Jones on bass, Jack White on drums (he plays drums for Dead Weather), and Allison Mosshart (singer for Dead Weather). They’re playing Write Me A Few Lines. Jonesy goes to town on the bass, while completely supporting the minimalist blues boogie of White and Steve. It’s The Coolest Thing Ever.

Lip Syncing But Still Cool

Guess what I woke up to, Youdopia? A brand new Led Zeppelin video. It’s not new, really, it’s newly discovered. In 1969 Led Zeppelin lip synced Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, and You Shook Me for the German tv show, The Beat Club.  Babe was discovered a year or so ago. You Shook Me seems to be a digital broadcast from Music Air Network (Japan). The quality is amazing. You probably won’t want to watch all six and a half minutes of it, since it’s just a pantomimed performance, but the discovery was posted on LedZeppelin.com by BillyMacQ, and is quickly making the rounds. Thanks, Billy. Great music is always welcome, and I think it’s the Coolest Shit Ever.

Vale, Youdopia. John Paul Jones’  new band is totally awesome. I don’t like them, but they kick nine different varieties of ass. And… when you see the footage, and hear the harmonies, bass, keyboards, etc… you cannot find the senior citizen in the group. Them Crooked Vultures is a great band. A real band. A tight band. And, the kids are all worked up. Mainly they’re excited to have Josh Homme from QOTSA and Dave Grohl together (again), but they’re all astonished at how badass Jonesy is. That’s because he has always been badass. He wrote the Black Dog riff. He plays the mandolin on Going to California… he is amazing. He’s just got the star quality of …. a bass player. He scored the orchestration to Kashmir…. and for Donovan’s Mellow Yellow as well. He’s been on as many sessions as Jimmy, but he was never in the Firm, or Coverdale/Page.

When Zeppelin broke up he taught Electronic Composition at college. Jimmy well… did this. I love Jimmy, I do. He is still my hero. Jonesy is just.. who I would rather be in a band with. Here’s a little pro shot video snippet of Them Crooked Vultures:

And here is a live song they played at the same festival as Faith No More, last week (8/09) It sounds kind of like Cream, but their other songs don’t, and they did no covers. No Nirvana, no Zep, no QOTSA, no Foo for you. Listen to the Grohl/Jones harmonies. It’s a really tight band.

Howdy youdopia. My friend Gus, who goes by August, now that he’s in the September of his years, says Youdopia hasn’t been updated since January. He is, of course, lying because I told him cold fusion doesn’t work. Anyhoo, this last month has been … how do you say… shitty and amazing.  So I blog Led Zeppelin. One of the reasons I love Zeppelin so much, and Jimmy Page in particular, is that they would cover almost any song. I never, ever, in my wildest dreams, would expect the boys to launch into Ray Charles’ Georgia On My Mind, but they did. And it’s good. Jimmy Page is absent, which leads me to believe that this was an off the cuff vamp while Jimmy changed a string.  Listen to the soul in John Paul Jones’  Fender Rhodes.  That’s a band, ladies and gentlemen, and I think it’s the Coolest Shit Ever. God, I love music.

Youdopians, I love John Paul Jones! He had a Q&A at a guitar clinic recently, and this is what he had to say about a tour with Jimmy Page, and Jason Bonham. Robert Plant? Probably not. I would love to see the boys play again. They hit it out of the park at the 02 reunion. We’ll see. They may not call it Led Zeppelin, but I’d love to see it, whoever they have singing.
