Pile it up! Pile it high on the platter!

I like it that the Stones are delving through the archives, and releasing some of the cool stuff they find. Things like the expanded Exile On Main Street, or Ladies and Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones (1972 concert film) are actually worth the release. They have a vitality that’s their own.

The latest Rolling Stones release, a concert filmed in Texas in 1978,  is also worth buying. It shows a newly clean (of heroin, not so much of coke, booze, and demon weed) Keith Richards, and a not yet burned out Ron Wood, playing most of their best selling album, Some Girls. I always keep two Stones albums on my playlists, Exile and Some Girls. Two entirely different vibes, coke and pepsi… or rather coke and smack. Some Girls in New York in the Studio 54 era, 1970′s.  You can read a nice review of this release by clicking the image above.

The Stones were still incredible in 1978, as you will see here. Beast of Burden is one of my favorite songs ever, ever, ever. That riff is insanely soulful, like Otis Redding, and the energy is high because it’s the 70′s and cocaine wasn’t thought to be addictive so… the show bounces along a bit like the Ramones. That’s a good thing. This is rock and roll, and Mick’s voice is brilliant (there are rumors of of some tasteful use of autotune, but… that’s what it’s fucking for), Keef is back in charge after a few years on the nod, and Ronnie can still demonstrate why he got the cushiest job in rock. Enjoy the coolest thing ever.

PS – For bonus points you can watch a live version of Shattered from this show, and it’s hot! Watch about 30 seconds in, Mick runs back to the drum riser, almost stepping on Ronnie’s joint, which Ronnie then offers to Mick, who declines with a swift shake of the head. Love it.

With this song the Rolling Stones achieved Beatles been unable to. The Beatles tried to be dark with Helter Skelter, but Paul couldn’t unclench enough to get that cthonic, and John’s demons were much too personal to name check the blitzkrieg.  The Stones gazed into the abyss, and let the abyss gaze into them, and they came out of it with Sympathy For The Devil: the song with no flaw. Keith Richards plays the perfect raw edge Non Servium guitar solo of all time. It may be the best solo ever. Sometimes all you need is feel, and he fucking nailed it. The lyrics are just good enough to maintain some zingers more than 40 years later.

Pretty ballsy for 1968, when Bobby Kennedy’s death could be measured in weeks, not decades. Watch this fan made video of the Rolling Stones demonstrating how to polish a turd until its brilliance fills the universe. There are some amazing things in this video. For instance, did you know that Sympathy’s iconic bass line is played by Keith Richards, not Bill Wyman? Pretty neato.  This music is definitely the coolest thing ever.

Remember back in 1977, when Keith Richards got busted for heroin? He was going to see some prison time, but the Canadian government gave him an out. He had to play a benefit concert for the blind. There’s a great story behind it. Read Keef’s autobiography. It’s awesome and pathetic, then awesome again.

Happy Free Download Friday, my dear people of Youdopia. I haven’t had anything ready (ripped, tagged, converted to mp3, zipped, and uploaded) for a couple of weeks, so I let you starve. That’s how I am. The grey skies are gonna clear up, so put on a happy face. I have a great show for you.

This is a new release, from the 1st gen safety tapes, of the Rolling Stones in Honolulu on 1/21/73.  This is one of their best tours, from the glory days with Mick Taylor. The notes for the show say:

JEMS is proud to be able to partner with and present some of the choice recordings in the D & D archives. Some of these recordings have been around for years but none of the master tapes or safety copies in some cases have ever been digitized until now. Dave and Donn taped many shows in and around the Seattle area in the 70′s and also were contemporaries of some of the JEMS members. Volume 10 consists of The Rolling Stones opening night show of their 73 Pacific tour. This is one of Donn’s better recordings. This would be the first time The Stones had played Hawaii since 1966. This show features the only perfomance of Live With Me on this and the subsequent European tour and is also the last time this song would ever be performed with Mick Taylor. All 3 Honolulu shows featured the rarely played for this period songs of It’s All Over Now and Dead Flowers. The performance is sharper and looser than the previous U.S. tour shows in 72. This one is a must have for the casual and hardcore Stones fan.

It’s awesome. It’s free. It’s live music for you. This is to commemorate the release of Keith Richards’ autobiography, which is waiting for me to pick up, at the post office. Yay! Enjoy.It is the Coolest Thing Ever.

I took an online test to self diagnose adult ADHD. If you scored a 11 or higher, you should “talk to your doctor”. I got a 23, Youdopia. I say this because that is how I found this video. Someone on my favorite Led Zeppelin forum posted a link to Keith Richards talking about.. something.. and from there it was bouncy, bouncy, bouncy to this little ditty. Keef n Ronnie doing a promo bump for the brand new MTV, back in 1981 or 82.. The reason that this is the Funniest Shit Ever, is what Keith says at the very end. He takes a drag from his cigarette, blows out and says, “Trust a pro.”  That is funny because the boys were obviously medicated and having, apparently, a bit of trouble with their lines, until Keef drops the bullshit and nails it. I love him.

I can watch hours of interview footage of him, because he’s funny as shit (great sense of humor), sharp as a tack, and truly, truly cool. Somewhere, probably 25 years ago I read an article saying that Keith was a zen master in a former life, and is using his merit to live a life (in this life) of unlimited action. I… can’t say it’s not true.

Happy Saturday, Youdopia. In honor of our happy pappy, Saturn, that jolly old elf (thud) I offer you a Rolling Stones concert from the absolute high point of their career. It’s called Lost Brussels (this version anyway) and it is, by far, the most popular, and common, Stones live recording. Click the pic to read about the myriad versions of it. I sent a copy to an old friend from high school, and I decided to share the download link with you. Free music. Gotta love it, and the quality can’t be beat, as it’s professionally recorded in stereo. It really is one of their best concerts ever, way better than Get Your Ya-Ya’s Out, in my opinion, and it is the Coolest Shit Ever. It is in keeping with the vibe of my earlier posts about the Exile On Main St reissue, and the bonus tracks therein.

This song, with Keith Richards for added legitimacy, is one of my favorite ever. Again, Tom sings in myths, he hums like a detuned radio.  Dear God, there’s so much of me that’s lain dormant.

You say that it’s gospel, but I know it’s only church.

Many miles away, something crawls from the slime, at the bottom of a dark Scottish loch.  It’s a great song. It gets to me the way the Pogues can, sometimes. Ah, well. So, I’m a bit maudlin. Swaha.

True Grace is often gritty. The holy spirit is a man of the people. Shakti herself is as much Salomé as Shekinah. It’s all in teh kinetics, the motion, the clapping, not the one hand. Shakti is the vibration of Shiva’s String. Lingam and Yoni fit into String and M theory better than Tao into the Quantum. Tailor made, that one.

People think I’m crazy, they’re always trying to waste me…make me burn the candle right down.

Keith Richards plays guitar the way Otis Redding sings. Chillblains. Yes he is a  saint. His realm is elemental, but halo of brass can shine as brightly as one of gold. Better a halo than a noose.
