17th Century Robots

Karakuri is the art of clockwork automation, dating back to Japan’s Edo Period (17th and 18th Centuries). Once the spring powered clockwork mechanism hit Japan, in the 1600s, the Japanese put the spring’s stored energy to use with art, flair, and grace.

These automatons can perform incredibly intricate, and detailed, acts like writing calligraphy, notching and shooting a bow and arrow, and serving tea. Watch the video. It’s totally worth it.

Sergey Larenkov is a Russian photographer who has taken photographs of Berlin, Prague, and Vienna, from the end of World War Two, and blended them seamlessly with pictures of the same places today. They’re brilliant, Youdopia.

Artistically, it’s a brilliant idea, and it turns out that the effects are a bit haunting. I see in them a reminder of the impermanence that is the nature of being, as well as an exemplar of the axiom, This too shall pass. There are dozens of images on Larenkov’s Live Journal page. Take a look. I hope you find them as neat as I do. They’re the Coolest Shit Ever, if only for the power of the images, and juxtaposition of war and peace. Since we’re seemingly careening toward World War Three, they have an extra oomph to me. Thanks to Laughing Squid for turning me on to this.

There’s not much to say, Youdopia. This image is a pinnacle of humor, and it’s (within my experience) almost 100% accurate. Yes, Youdopia, I watch LOST. I know every flaw, every wrinkle, the overacting, I know. I watch it, and I’ll watch the LOST finale. I didn’t watch it from the beginning. I watched seasons 1 through 4 last summer, and then jumped onboard with Season 5. Anyway, I saw this pie chart on Laughing Squid, and I saw they ginked it from geekculture, so… have at it, chums.

Good Monday morning, Youdopia. I came across this, this morning, on Laughing Squid. Someone opened a Twitter account as Ferris Bueller, and a Foursquare account as well (clever), and started tweeting the movie. Take a look at the image, it’s pretty self explanatory. As humor goes, it’s not the Funnest Thing Ever, or the Coolest Thing Ever, but it’s a pretty nifty one shot smile. I hope you smile with me.
